The Coffee

This year our roasters, have chosen to feature our Colombia Finca Palmichal for this exciting collaboration project. Grown in the department of Quindío, Colombia.

Once the empty barrel is in our warehouse, we measure the moisture content inside. The vapors are still quite present, so the barrel is aired out for approximately a day to ensure it is at the correct moisture level before we put the coffee in. We then weigh out our green coffee beans, place them in a fine mesh bag, and lay them on a rack inside the barrel for about three days. We continue to test the moisture content of the barrel and the coffee beans throughout this process, as we are checking for a certain percentage to infuse the green beans with. Too much, and the whiskey will overpower the beans - too little, and the coffee won't have the aromatics we're looking for. After we've reached our desired percentage, we take the green beans out and let them rest to release any overpowering alcohol vapors.

Then is time to roast and enjoy!

The Sipper

Created exclusively for Caravan by local artist and educator Mark Terry, the Espresso Sipper is a limited-edition exploration of coffee, craft, and terroir.

Mark is known for ceramics born from the wood-fired kilns he has built throughout his career, with work ranging from functional pottery to monumental sculpture. For this collaboration, he brought coffee directly into the ceramic-making process.

Our Colombia Finca Palmichal was used in place of water as Mark threw the cups and was also wedged directly into the clay. Each piece is therefore literally made with the same Colombian coffee found in our single-origin offering—and used to create this year’s Whiskey Coffee release.

Only 75 sippers were made, and because each is handcrafted, no two are exactly alike. Natural variations in glaze, texture, shape, and capacity are part of what makes every piece unique.

At approximately 4 oz, the Espresso Sipper is designed to move easily from your morning espresso to an evening whiskey—a small, functional piece of art made to be used and enjoyed.

Branch Point Distillery is a small independent whiskey distillery in the heart of Oregon wine country. At Branch Point Distillery they know that the unexpected paths of life are often the most rewarding. They  source grains from local farmers to produce whiskies not found anywhere else and utilize traditional methods of production such as distillers’ malt, pot stills, pre-prohibition barrel strengths, and non-chill filtration to create more flavorful and authentic whiskies. Their recipes are original to Branch Point and are designed to showcase these traditional distillation methods and local grains. They mash, ferment, distill, mature, and bottle on site. Caravan Coffee is proud to partner with Branch Point and encourage you to visit their tasting room!
